| Nelson Mandela's dream: Making world-class healthcare available to the children of Southern Africa through a state-of-the-art facility - the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital. The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital honours Mr. Nelson Mandela's life-long commitment to children. In his words, this hospital will be a "credible demonstration of the commitment of African leaders to place the rights of children at the forefront". This is an ambitious project initiated by the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund to build in Johannesburg a 200-bed academic and paediatric referral facility that will serve children across Southern Africa. No child will be turned away due to inability to pay. Prominent international and local architectural firms have already completed the design of the building. The University of Witwatersrand (Wits) has committed the land adjacent to its Medical School as the site of the hospital, and will lead in the training and research in this facility, providing state-of-the-art care.
This hospital addresses a great need; there are only four hospitals in Africa to serve nearly 450 million children. Millions of these children suffer from life-threatening illnesses and have little or no chance of receiving the specialised care they need.
The Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital will be built with the support of donors from across the globe in honour of Mr. Mandela, caring for the children of Southern Africa. Click here for the Business Brief. Click here for our most recent Stakeholder Update on the progress of the project. |
